Rankin treble sinks Devils

17th March 2008
Coach Rick Strachan was full of praise for Rob Rankin after the American forward netted a hat-trick as Excel Hull Stingrays beat Cardiff Devils 5-3 at Hull Arena in the bmibaby Elite League.

Rankin put Stingrays ahead three times only for Brad Voth, Dion Darling and Matt Towe to level for Devils. Bryce Thoma restored the home side's lead before Jani Virtanen’s empty-net marker with 26 seconds left secured the win.

Strachan said: "It's a good feeling to get a victory especially when we had so many fans in the building for the first time and hopefully they enjoyed it enough to come back.

"Rob Rankin was the difference. He scored three goals, he was all over the ice and he was the best player out there."
