Play-off hopes over for Stingrays
Ben Storey netted the go-ahead goal for Vipers in the second period on the powerplay and Jeff Hutchins took advantage of another powerplay in the 50th minute. Stingrays pulled goaltender Ladislav Kudrna for an extra skater in an attempt to claw a goal back but Colin Shields capitalised with 54 seconds left. But Stingrays managed to avoid a shut-out when Luke Boothroyd scored seven seconds from time. Coach Rick Strachan said: "We did everything but score. It just topped off the season. We have played so well in games, out-shooting teams, but have not been able to put the puck in the net. "When you out-shoot teams 35-22 on the road but only score one goal, you are not going to win. We just have not scored enough goals this season and that, as well as our six penalty shot losses, have been the difference." Stingrays return to action on Saturday when they face Nottingham Panthers at the National Ice Centre before finishing the season with home games against Cardiff Devils next Sunday and Manchester Phoenix on March 23 (both 6pm face-offs). |
