Stingrays live to fight another day

6th March 2008
Excel Hull Stingrays coach Rick Strachan admitted reaching the bmibaby Elite League play-offs is "still a long shot" despite a 4-3 win over Basingstoke Bison at Hull Arena.

Jake Riddle and Rob Rankin put Stingrays 2-0 ahead at the end of the first period before Greg Chambers pulled one back on the powerplay.

But Riddle replied within 34 seconds and Sergiy Rublivsky added a powerplay fourth to put Stingrays in control going into the final period.

Goals from Kyle Petko and Chambers within the first four minutes of the final period set up a nervous finish but despite pulling goaltender Curtis Cruickshank for an extra skater, Bison could not find an equaliser.

Strachan said: "We were the better team for the first two periods, we built up a 4-1 lead but they came back strong in the third and got a couple of goals but we hung on.

"It was good to get a victory and it was good to give ourselves a chance of making the play-offs. It is still a long shot but we did the work we had to and we now have to get ready for Saturday against Edinburgh. If we win we are still in there and if we lose you can stick that folk back in us again because we are done."
