GB call for Boothroyd

7th April 2008
Excel Hull Stingrays defenceman Luke Boothroyd is in line to make his World Championship debut after being called into the Great Britain squad.

The 21-year-old was initially placed on standby but now joins Stingrays team-mate David Phillips in the party as Belfast Giants defenceman Shane Johnson has not received his international clearance in time to take part.

Coach Paul Thompson said: "Luke is a strong lad and we have been looking at him all season. He played really well when he came away with us to France [for the Euro Hockey Challenge]. He skates well, he is mobile and he fits our criteria."

Britain will take on Poland, hosts Austria, Korea, the Netherlands and Kazakhstan from April 13-21 and will prepare for the championships by meeting Sweden Under-20s in a warm-up international at Coventry’s Skydome Arena on Thursday.
